Contrast

Contrast is what separates a flat, hazy-looking photo from one that feels sharp and defined, even without touching sharpness at all. Overcast-day photos, scanned prints that have faded, and screenshots or photos of screens often come out with washed-out blacks and dull whites — the tonal range is all bunched up in the middle instead of stretching from true black to true white. Pushing contrast up widens that range back out: darks get darker, lights get lighter, and the image reads as more defined. Pulling contrast down does the reverse, which is occasionally useful for softening a harsh, high-contrast source image before further editing.

This slider runs from 0% (flat gray) through 100% (unchanged) up to 200% (aggressively punchy), rendered live using the browser's built-in canvas contrast filter. It's a global adjustment — every pixel's distance from mid-gray gets scaled by the same amount — rather than a local or tone-curve-based one, so it's fast and predictable, but it can't selectively fix contrast in just the shadows or just the highlights the way a real curves tool would. Pushed too far in either direction, it'll clip detail out of the brightest and darkest areas rather than recovering it.
